Burnage
Manchester Suburbs.
Gunn parked the car outside the grocers. The row of shops was on a busy road, two lanes in each direction, and linking straight onto the M56. It wasnât exactly a discreet location.
âDonât tell me heâs dumped her in the middle of the shop,â Gunn said.
âNo, itâs in the flat upstairs, sir,â the uniformed officer who met Gunn responded. âAnd itâs a mess. Iâve never seen anything like it. I⦠Iâ
âAlright, son. You just stay out here and keep an eye out for any witnesses. And donât let anyone in without authorisation, okay?â
âOkay, thanks, sir.â
Gunn walked side by side with Melissa and Jessica into the shop. He scanned the place as they proceeded through. Nothing looked untoward. There was no mess, or any sign of a break in.
âIs this the only way in?â he asked.
âNo, apparently there is an entrance through an alley at the back as well,â Jessica answered.
âRight, Melissa. You go around the back and get a good look at that entrance. I donât want anyone messing it up. Check the gate, the alley, fuck, even check the puddles on the floor. Anything at all to nail this bastard.â
âOn it.â Melissa walked back through the front door to the shop and made her way around the back. Gunn and Jessica carried on through the store. They went through a door which led into a small staff room. Nothing much to see in there, just a sink, a kettle and a fridge. Again, there was no mess or sign of disruption.
A door led from the staff room into a back yard. To the right was another door, it was already open. Jessica checked the lock on the way in. No sign of forced entry. Gunn shoved passed her and made his way up the stairs.
âOh, Christ!â Gunn shouted. âThis has to be the same guy, Jessica get up here!â
Jessica rushed up the stairs and into the room where Gunn was waiting. She gasped at the sight in front of her. The victim lay with her head upside down resting on the floor. The rest of her body arched up onto the bed, like she had frozen mid-fall. Her hair was drenched red with blood that had poured from her slit throat. Her eyes held a wide stare of death. Jessica couldnât help but stop and stare at them for a moment. Then she scanned the rest of the body. Her nipples had been cut off; two large holes remained in the breasts, circled with multiple shades of red where the blood had run. She looked further along the body, there were no marks on the stomach, but she could see something large sticking out from underneath her.
âWhatâs that underneathâ¦â
âItâs a chair leg,â Gunn interrupted. âAnd itâs not underneath her, itâs in her.â
âOh my God,â Jessica gasped. âWhy would anyone do that?â
âExactly, Iâve not seen anything this brutal for years, not until today. Iâve had two of them, and it's more than enough.â He gritted his teeth. âWe really need to catch this guy.
